So why a left atrial thrombus develops?
The slowdown of blood flow and stasis in the left atrium associated with rheumatic mitral valve stenosis (RMVS) causes the formation of a thrombus. The resulting thrombus joins the systemic circulation from the left atrium and causes embolic complications, the most serious being in the cerebrovascular system.
